Richard Lewis, the stand-up comedian who appeared alongside Larry David in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” passed away Tuesday night from a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles, Variety confirmed. He was 76 years old.

Lewis had announced in April that he was battling Parkinson’s disease and retiring from stand-up comedy. He had recently attended the 12th season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” on HBO.

In 2021, Lewis announced that he would not be returning for the 11th season of “Curb,” citing overcoming three surgeries. He had stunned audiences in one episode of the 11th season, saying to Variety. ‘When I walk in and they applaud, it feels like a million dollars. Larry doesn’t like hugging, and he hugged me, and after we shot our scene, he told me how happy he was.

Richard Lewis, who portrayed himself in a semi-fictionalized version over 24 years on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” was known for his natural, self-deprecating comedic style. After making his acting debut in the 1979 comedy “Diary of a Young Comic,” Lewis rose to fame in the 1980s and 90s with appearances on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” In 1985, he showcased his dark yet vibrant animated persona on his Showtime comedy special “I’m in Pain,” followed by HBO specials “I’m Exhausted” (1988), “I’m Doomed” (1990), and “Richard Lewis: The Magical Misery Tour” (1997).

In 1989, Lewis starred in the ABC sitcom “Anything But Love,” where he portrayed a colleague of Jamie Lee Curtis at a Chicago magazine, both of whom fall in love and struggle to maintain a professional relationship. The series ran for four seasons across 56 episodes before concluding in 1992. Lewis also appeared in other sitcom roles during the 90s, including the short-lived “Daddy Dearest” starring Don Rickles and “Hiller and Diller” featuring Kevin Nealon.

Lewis’s film roles include the 1993 comedy “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” the 1995 sitcom “Living Las Vegas,” and the 1997 rom-com “Hugo Pool.” In “Drunks,” alongside Faye Dunaway, George Martin, Parker Posey, Howard Rollins, Spalding Gray, and Diane Wiest, he portrayed a character struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

Throughout his career, Lewis incorporated themes of recovery and the struggles of addiction into his comedy. He was outspoken about his battle with addiction. Lewis, who previously used cocaine and crystal meth. He says he decided to sober up, partly inspired by the death of actor John Candy in 1994.

In 2021, after returning to “Control Your Enthusiasm” following various health battles, Lewis told Variety, “For nearly 27 years, I’ve been mining my life for comedy and temperance. I’m ecstatic at this moment. I’ve never learned how to hold joy in my head for more than a minute, but today I’m breaking all records in my life.”

In a statement shared with HBO, David spoke about his long-time co-star and friend, saying, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital, and for most of my life, he was as much a brother to me as anyone could be. His combination of fun and sweetness was a rare mix. But today he made me cry, and I’ll never forgive him for that.”

Legacy:

In addition to the surviving radio stations, in 1992, Richard Lewis’ wife, Marian Lewis, founded the Marian Park Lewis Foundation for the Arts. It provides scholarships for students from the northern Shenandoah Valley.
